Nigerian national team player Alex Iwobi has partnered with WildAid to raise awareness about the illegal wildlife trade in Nigeria. Iwobi is also a football player for Everton FC, an English professional football club that competes in the Barclays Premier League, the top tier of English football.
The British-Nigerian began his career with Arsenal football club where he won the English FA Cup, made 149 appearances and scored 15 goals. He left Arsenal in the summer of 2019 and joined Everton FC, Northwest England.
In 2015, Alex Iwobi made his international debut on the Nigerian National team. He also represented England in the under-18 level before switching to the Nigerian football team. In 2017, Iwobi scored the one goal that helped Nigeria qualify for Russia’s 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Off the pitch, Alex Iwobi is inspiring young people to find purpose. In February 2021, he launched Project 17, a program that aims to inspire young people to reach their potentials and share lessons learned from football.
Iwobi joins other Nigerian ambassadors Davido, Mayorkun, and Emmanuela to represent the next generation of young Nigerians lending their voices against illegal wildlife trade in Nigeria.
Nigeria is a transit hub in the trade of pangolin scales and ivory exported to Asian countries such as China and Vietnam. WildAid’s work in Nigeria combines law and enforcement with a public awareness campaign. Alex Iwobi is happy to partner with WildAid to increase public awareness of illegal wildlife activities in Nigeria.
