Earlier this month, WildAid was named the “2021 Public Welfare Organization of the Year” by China Philanthropist magazine. Praised for its unique approach and creative campaigns, the magazine recognized WildAid for its influence on wildlife consumption behavior. “While so many organizations are thriving in the field of animal protection, WildAid has taken a different approach, focusing on the source of the threat to endangered wildlife – illegal trade and consumer demand. With the powerful public influence of celebrities and effective communication, WildAid has implanted the concept of ‘When the buying stops, the killing can too’ into people’s minds and made wildlife protection not only a public welfare topic, but also a social mainstream value,” (Xiaojun, 2022). The magazine’s first issue of 2022 features an article about WildAid, highlighting the campaigns we ran in the lead up to last fall’s Convention on Biological Diversity Conference of the Parties (COP 15), along with our broader wildlife and EarthAid programs.

Founded in December 2010, China Philanthropist is a monthly magazine focusing on charity, wealth, and social issues that is managed by China News Service and Ci Media Group. The magazine has approximately 100,000 subscribers and 800,000 online readers across China. It has featured stories on many local and international celebrities, such as Sir Richard Branson, Yao Ming, Peggy Dulany, Tony Blair, Peter Buffett. In the first issue of each year, the magazine announces the “People of the Year,” “Public Welfare Organizations of the Year,” and “Public Welfare Projects of the Year” from the year prior, each selected by staff. For 2021, the magazine’s staff selected 7 people, 2 organizations and 4 projects as recipients of the titles, with WildAid being the only international organization.
